Communication is the Key

These are some guidelines for talking about alcohol use with your student. The key is to discuss this issue before and during their college career.
  • Talk about alcohol use as part of more general discussions about everyday college life.
  • Ask questions and listen, but only ask questions for which you are prepared to hear any answer.
  • Avoid glorifying your own college experiences with alcohol.
  • Realize that the environment around your student is different from when you were in college.
  • Encourage your student to get involved in student organizations and community service opportunities.
  • If your student shares with you that he/she is under pressure to drink, offer suggestions to help them fight the pressure:
       • Arrive late and leave early.
       • Arrive with a soft drink in hand your hand, and never leave it unattended.
       • Volunteer to be the designated driver.
       • Attend events with non-drinking friends and support other's choice to not drink.
       • Avoid friendships with people who are heavy drinkers.
